On August 19, 2024, long-time Wayne County, Tennessee residents Howard and Elaine Dustin experienced a tragic barn fire at their home on Buttermilk Ridge Road. The inferno completely destroyed the barn and consumed the winter supply of hay and alfalfa recently put up for their livestock, along with a variety of hand tools and farming implements.
Howard and Elaine have made their home on Buttermilk Ridge Road and been active members of the larger Central Tennessee agricultural and farming community for two decades. They have mentored new farmers up and down Tennessee, guided the younger generation of Wayne and Laurence Counties, and lent assistance when neighbors experience their own calamities.
Now, Howard and Elaine need help to recover from a devastating blow. Their insurance policy covers neither outbuildings nor structure contents. Funds raised will be used for site cleanup, replacement of the previous barn, and ensuring sufficient winter fodder for their livestock.
Howard and Elaine helped me immensely when I experienced a similar fire my first year farming. Every bit of help, even if just forwarding this plea, is appreciated and will help two of the best people I know recover from this terrible loss.
